Ouch!!!No this post isn't something about Germany, though now looking at the title my own first assumption would be that it is. There are so many quirky things about Korea, but the one that I really love is this interactive game that I now love to play with my boyfriend.

Walking together one day I saw one of those new stretched out looking buggies. You know... The ones that volkswagon decided to make to appeal more to men, because they felt their traditional looking ones were too hmmm... "girlie"? Yeah. I sort of don't care for the new look. But anyways back to my story and reason for this post.

Stretched out Beetle. Horrible.

True buggy

Now there are virtually NO volkswagon beetles in Korea. In fact anything other than Hyundai, Kia, and the occasional Toyota, along with a variation of completely foreign vehicles which I cannot even name because even google doesn't hold the answers for when I search it, any American vehicle is a rare sight. So when I saw this stretched out ugly black buggy backing up in front of us, I instinctively threw my hand out and punched my boyfriend's arm "BLACK PUNCH BUGGY!!!!" Man it felt so good too. Haha.

But after I had my small moment of victory from winning at this old traditional but quirky American game of our own, I saw my boyfriend looking at me with the most puzzled look. Always have to remind myself "Dorothy you're not in Kansas anymore." After I explained my reason for whipping my hand out at him and shouting like a mad woman in utter chaos after doing so, I sulked thinking it was something that we wouldn't be able to share in playing much, because of the lack of buggies in Korea, even horrible stretched out ones.

"Hey, we have something like that too." My eyes lit up to these words. He went on and explained to me that instead of a buggy, they have these vehicles called Matiz. They're these really tiny funky looking cars that look like they belong with the smart car family.... Almost. The game is played by hitting the other person (or people) your with ONLY when you see a Gold one. Upon seeing this vehicle and hitting the person, you say "Hwan-Geum Matiz" (황금 마팆) literal translation is "Golden Matiz".

Golden Matiz model

Since being introduced to this game, it's become our favorite couple prank on each other. Sometimes we even hit each other saying "Hwangeum Matiz" and really there is no such thing. We do it just because. So for any future visits to Korea or if you are already here and want to keep the punch buggy game alive, just make a small adjustment to your game and keep your eyes out for this funny looking little car. There's plenty of them. :D
You can imagine that I'd been to quiet a few motels as each weekend I've made strides to travel and explore this land. Okay.... So what...? You sleep in a lot of motels. Well the thing is that staying in a motel here is actually a rather different kind of experience than any motel stay back in the USA.

Here guests are accommodated with the whole standard bed, bathroom, television, and night stand... I've yet to find a bible. But what is beyond the standards is what left me to believe that my very first motel room was essentially already occupied. Hair brushes, lotions, full bars of soap, large shampoo and conditioner containers, bathroom shoes and the regular sized tube of toothpaste left within the room. Did the hotel master make a mistake?

Answer is: no.
They hand you the key along with a durable plastic zip case which
contains your toothbrush, some extra face wash, shaving cream, and
lotion samples, and oh yes.... a condom. Or if your really lucky a few.

If you were to check into such a place without some variation of those listed above, you should check out immediately and ask for your money back. This is not to say that all places are the same, variations of this do exist. Actually last night I stayed at the Toma House Motel in Jeonju for the first time, the first hotel other than the Figaro Motel which is the most popular place for me to stay. The Toma gave me a packet of tooth paste rather than having a tube already supplied, no razor or condom, something the Figaro and some other motels will supply you with. However, a bonus that I found with the Toma house is that they have full length bathroom towels. Usually this is a rare find in Korea, as most places will supply your room with towels that are about the size of American hand towels.

How many times did I accidentally forget my toothbrush or toothpaste at home and had to go to the front desk of the American motel and ask them if they had any? Too many. I remember sometimes having to wait for someone to be there and even sometimes being charged extra for the accommodation of a toothbrush that I'd only get to use once or twice. Here I have no worries for such small things, leaving me more time to think about my next move for my travels.
Another thing to mention is... most motels/ hotels are targeted towards the idea of "love". The general idea is people go there to do things they otherwise cannot do else where. Get what I'm saying? So for me... This was a bit strange, since American women already have a small reputation of being "easy." I now chuckle at the idea when I see people looking at me exiting the motel after a night's stay. In my head i cant help but replay this thought "Ooooooh yeah!!!! I totally had a wild night!!! I so slept in that bed with those fluffy blankies and wrapped my body around those poofy pillows. And you know what....? I took up the entire queen sized bed too!!! WoooOoo it was a fun night." I've been in and out of so many of these motel hotel stays the idea of potentially being mistaken for having a "good night" really no longer bothers me. It's become my accustomed life style as a traveler and explorer of Korea.

As for my mentioning of the Figaro Motel in Jeonju, I spend more time sleeping there than my own home. It got to the point that the one desk lady will knock off 5,000₩ for me if her boss isn't around. Hahahha. And more than enough times my boyfriend has accompanied me out of the motel, where the looks people give us is through the roof of funny in my opinion. In general people will stare and not just at me, but him too. "Who is he? How did they meet? What is it about him that he succeeded to get with a foreigner girl?" Not all people think this, but we've been approached and asked before and it's not just the older generation either. So anti up the questioning stares and shock when we exit out of a motel together..... My thoughts "oooooooooohhhhhh yeeeeeaaahhhhhh." Haha

Checking out is easy as pie at the Figaro. Key basket in elevator

Lastly i would like to mention why Korea has set such a high standard for motels and hotels. Korea was a very poor country only 6 decades ago. When the country first started to rebuild itself, times were difficult and any sort of business made between people meant your business would survive another day. You would be extremely grateful for your costumer's presence and did your best to present your best costumer service to them, in hopes of them returning later on. In addition as the country became more established competition bumped up and new ways of servicing the costumer did too. Korea cares about customer service all over, not just in love motels. But because of this extreme care for guest service it can really make for a different experience in such a common place.
I'm serious about practicing efficient teaching so my students can get an optimal learning experience from me. But sometimes no matter how hard you try to create a good lesson plan, the students just might not get it. So my best advice is to also remain calm and cool, and be prepared to rebound with something new. This isn't teaching advice people.... But life advice too. It's one of the many things I've learned since being in Korea.
You get the drift. Here though I decided to bring the fun home and try some instant green tea latte right in my very home, made by Barista master Jazz! (Not Really)

Very similar to making instant coffee or even more so like hot cocoa, you just add in the green mix to some hot water, or as I prefer... MILK! And enjoy it. I suggest 1 packet for the small instant coffee sized mugs and 2 packets for the standard American sized mugs, like the one featured in the film.

This will certainly be one of the many things I will miss when I return to the states this August to finish my education. But fret not sweeties.... I shall return to Korea soon enough following May. :)
I meant to share this video a while back when I first got here in my Gimje home. However, I believe that with the struggles of first learning how to be a better teacher for my students and also keeping myself active by traveling on the weekends I forgot about it until just now, seeing it in my video's file. None the less not much has changed since, except my hair is shorter now from a nice trim. So onward with the long overdue expired >>>>video <<<< shall we?!
This is what I used to help jump start my own language reading and writing comprehension even before taking a class course in it. I strongly suggest this site above any other. For those curious and passionate ones who want to start reading Hangul, the Korean alphabet. Korean is a phonic language just like English, which also makes it the easiest Asiatic language to learn. With only about 10 to 12 more letters than the English alphabet, learning how to read simple words and phrases in Hangul are literally just moments away. Give it a try!
Upon our arrival I remembered turning to Kimmi and looking at her.
She was pretty emotional the whole time, this is one of the biggest
changes for her, for us both. Each of us come from different walks of
life, but found each other from our mutual love for Korea and the
Entertainment enterprise. I know within moments of being in Korea... the
land of our K-popping dreams, I told her one thing. Something that I
thought back in October when I started this whole thing, would be
something I would have to say to only myself.
"Welcome Home."

So
here I put together a quick little video for you curious little
critters. I know your all just DYING to see what a Korean dorm room
entails. Where we're currently located is the Sejong campus of Korea
University in Jochiwon. And to be honest... I'm living better than my
Stony Brook friends. ;D I truly believe that South Korea has surpassed
us in many things... and giving students a nice place to live and GOOD food is definitely one of those things they excelled at.

For
those wondering, me and Kimmi are not roomed together. We live about 10
rooms away from one another but on the same floor. But the rooms layouts
are the same!
Okayz! No more "Blah Blah!" Watch the video and Enjoy! ^ㅊ^

First and foremost... HAPPY NEW YEARS! This concludes that in just 32 days me and my partner will be shipping out! And believe me.... I'm counting the days!! >.< Now while many of us are excited for the New Years making new goals and ambitions for the year ahead of us, we should take this time to reflect what New Years to the people of Korea means. What January 1st means to us is not the same for them.
In fact it's the lunar calendar which marks each new year for Korea and not the 1st of January. Though the 1st is celebrated as well, it's not as significant. You may be more familiar with the term "Chinese New Year" which is the more popular term in the USA. Again, because I am from the USA, I am not too familiar what other countries may call the Lunar New Year, if you know any other names for it let us know in the comments box below and share you knowledge with us!

Chinese New Year Dragon

What is bothersome though is that the "Chinese New Year" is not shared by just China and often I have seen inquiries and heard that other people who share this similar concept of the Lunar New year feel over shadowed by China's celebration. It's important to know that several Asian countries such as Vietnam, Japan, Tibet, Mongol, Indonesia, and many other
countries including Korea celebrate the Lunar New Year and each have a different name for it. For Korea, the name is 설날or Seolnal.
What is also really cool about Korea's celebration of the New Year is that it is also nationally recognized as every one's...and I mean EVERY ONE'S birthday. Yes. If your 24 years old like Kimmi, you will then be 25 on the day of the new year. Pretty cool right? Two Birthdays for EVERYONE!!!! ^O^ Just for the record, I'd be 25 too, since I will be turning 24 before the new cycle of the Lunar year. *Disclaimer so my partner doesn't feel like I'm picking at her age.*

Example of a Male and Female Hanbok

The festivities of the new year in the US is celebrated on the day of, however in Korea the festivities for their new year lasts three days! Uniting with family, wearing beautiful and traditional garments called Hanboks (한복), playing traditional games, performing rituals in honor of ancestors, and eating yummy foods, are a few to name practices. Many people also travel to the far east of the peninsula to see the dawning sun as a symbol of new things to come.

So when is the Lunar New Year? Well... it varies. Okay I'm going to try my best to explain this... So there is 12
lunar months in the year, just as a Solar year. How each month is marked is from the first night of the month, the moon is at it's darkest, seeming there "is no moon". As each night passes,
the moon will appear fuller until the fifteenth night which the
moon is the fullest and at it's brightest peak. From this night the moon will regress back to the dark "absent" moon, which completes the cycle of one lunar month. Now taking note, when the moon is full or is least full, it doesn't quiet match up with our Solar months, So the date for the Lunar New Year is marked when the 12 months of the Lunar Calendar have completed it's 12 Month long cycle.

Have I blabbed on long enough about this? Ha, I think so. So for the finale... this year's Lunar New Year and Happy Big Birthday to the Korean peoples is... **Drum Roll*...... February 10th! Just 8 days after me and Kimmi arrive in Korea. Oooohhhhhhh Yeeaaah! SO PUMPED FOR THIS!
